Godo - there are many different remedies for depression, but it depends on what type of depression it is to know what can actually help a particular person.

Are they depressed because of a lack of purpose or meaning in their lives, or because of a situational cause, or perhaps a physical cause? Even with physical depression, there are different types as well, bi-polar, clinical, SAD, etc....

Medication is available for physically related depressions, and even reactive, short-term depression caused by specific incidents (such as the death of a loved one). For the existential type of depression, many people have found solace and comfort in religions (and cults) but I think that a healthier (IMO) method for relieving depression can be found in 1) finding a passion (such as music or animals or sports etc...) and participating in that activity and 2) contributing in some way to humanity (through volunteer work, fostering, animal shelters, tutoring, and so on). Giving to others has a wonderful way of making a person feel good about themselves.

I don't think that Knowledge can help with depression because meditation is too introverted and can even lead to deepening despression (once again IMO).

Our society is full of stresses and other environmental factors that can lead to an imbalance in brain chemistry. If people you know are suffering from it - I would recommend they see a doctor to diagnose what type of depression it is, and to see if medication is needed.....
