Susan,

I saw no unkindness or insensitivity in Nemesis' post. Nemesis has always posted with sensitivity, and I'm sure if she was talking to someone currently suffering from depression her words would have been quite different. She also made it clear that the depression she was talking about was the vague "existential type" of depression where some people can't see the meaning in their lives.

Regarding her reference to 'self-centered' when I read her post I immediately thought, 'YES!', that applies so accurately to me when I was depressed. For me, being self-centered was a cause of my depression, not a result, and that's what I think Nemesis meant. The phrase 'self-centered' occurs thoughout the clinical literature on depression on the internet. Being self-centered for a psychological condition may be a contributory cause of the condition, whereas being self-centered for cancer or a heart attack may be a result of the condition.

It is a shame when good people on this forum fall out over small misunderstandings of our words.

John.
