I don't think most premies were pretending to be happy.  Pretending means you know you aren't happy but are pretending to be.  

One of the things I learnt here in those early days of exiting was how brain imaging shows how our brains shut down under meditation rather than opening up as it feels like.  I think I'm right in saying that when the agya to meditate 24hrs a day was rescinded it was because there were legal issues.

So that's first point - meditation tends to cause silly smiling. 

Second point is that at ground level we were joining a group of friendly welcoming people and doing something together we believed really mattered, so that does make for good spirits.  

Personally I can't say that without adding it is a fact that there were plenty of fakers mixed into the group at ground level as well.  So maybe there was a fair bit of pretending to be happy from them for the purposes of fitting in with the group - like a wolf in sheep's clothing.
