(Not directed at you, Lesley )

After the initial euphoria that Susan alluded to, happiness wasn't even the point. It had nothing whatsoever to do with it. I was often miserable as a result of all the pressures I was under, both within and outside the cult. I often pasted on smiles in front of others to hide my inner turmoil because that's what good premies do - they shine for their Lord no matter what. Premies were clearly not a happy group of people (at least no more or less so than others); they only/often put up a front. They hid behind facades just like Prem Rawat does to this day.

Based on my experience, this focus on happiness, presumably as as some sort of measure, misses the point. Once you were hooked, you were just along for the ride no matter what and no matter how you felt day to day. I would go so far as to say that premies don't even evaluate the effectiveness of Knowledge based on how they feel day to day. "That's rediculous!," they would say.

You were trapped in Prem Rawat's orbit and dependent on him for your inner-most sense of well-being and stability. It permeates your entire life. You come to "know" it IS your life regardless of everything else, how you "feel" being the least of it.

Apparently, Prem Rawat got his kicks by shoving finely dressed premies into swimming pools, dumping motor oil on them, poking their penises with a stick and likely worse. I'm sure it left them in a disoriented, confused and conflicted state, but they remained as devoted to him and committed to Knowledge as ever.

That's why it's such an insideous cult.
