"This led to feelings of hopelessness and inferiority in his victims, who felt there was no way that their word would have been believed over his."

Thank you for such a fitting analogy.

I shied away from comparing Jimmy Savile's shocking sexual abuse of hundreds of victims, mostly children, to Prem Rawat's behavior. As I thought about it, however, the mental and emotional harm Prem Rawat inflicted on far more (indoctrinated) victims by conspicuously promoting himself as god or god-like and reaping the benefits of being treated accordingly - going so far as to knowingly allow them to name him in their wills - approaches a similar level. When it comes to abuse, physical typically trumps mental and emotional, but not always by much.

Jimmy was brought down by an intrepid investigative reporter.
