My former guru, Sathya Sai Baba, deceives his public daily with his false materializations. Deception justifies the word victim. Yes, I was a naive, gullible victim though I admit that it Baba's belief system was also quite strongly a contagious illusion. This delusionial belief system helped me in some ways too, I have to admit.

Some scholars assert that apostates (ex-members who have become vocal critics) cannot be reliable witnesses. In contrast, I think that being a reliable witness has everything to do with trying to separate facts from opinions and interpretations, not with being a believer or apostate. I admit that former follower can and sometimes feel betrayed, which may have a bad influence on their testimonies, if they they do not excercise restraint. Believers should be aware that their love to the leader and their affiliation with the organization may result in a (far) too positive picture and even cloud their common sense and understanding.
