''What incentives would they have to lie? - to remove responsibility for their own actions - they need a way to explain to themselves and others why they were so stupid to spend 10, 20, 30 years in a "cult" - to portray themselves as "victims" of the nefarious "cult leader" (i.e. if the leader was nefarious, then I was a victim. If the leader is a good guy, and I left after 20 years then I am a moron. So I paint the picture of a "destructive cult" and then I am OK. So obvious)''

I agree with you and disagree with Jim that ex-members may unconsciously distort the truth for those reasons. But you cannot generalize about the reliability of their testimonies: it is crazy to assert that ex-members cannot tell the truth, regardless of their efforts to present a fair, balanced picture.

In contrast to what you write, I did not need to explain to anyone why I left the cult. I could have left quietly if I wanted but I felt devasted and wanted to understand how I could have been so wrong and at the same time so certain of being right. In contrast to what you write, I accept that I have been stupid, which is, I have to admit, a blow to my self esteem.

You seem to suggest that the word victim is wrong even if there is proven systematic deception, such as with Sathya Sai Baba's materializations. Please explain why.
