The late Bryan Ronald Wilson basically wrote that I am a liar and will always be a liar unless I stop criticizing my former guru. I wrote Dr. David G. Bromley and Richard Singelenberg emails about this subject. Singelenberg wrote me that apostates are not more unreliable than current members and that I should read the following
1. A Shupe & DG Bromley (red) “Anti-Cult Movements in Cross-Cultural Perspective” (1994) 2. DG Bromley (red) “The Politics of Religious Apostasy. The Role of Apostates in the Transformation of Religious Movements” (1998) 3. DG Bromley (red) “Falling from the Faith. Causes and Consequences of Religious Apostasy”. (1988) 4. S Wright “Leaving Cults: The Dynamics of Defection”. (1987) I believe that there is some truth in the statements of these sociologists. Apostates of the dominant religion in society will be attacked, excluded and isolated and hence these apostates will often turn silent or word their criticsms in a mild form. That is very much unlike the apostates of a novel foreign religious movement (e.g. a cult) that has few allies, who are free to voice their criticisms and are occasionally encouraged by the rest of society.
