Paddy, I think the difference between cults/NRMs and mainstream religion is the combination of unpredictability and intensity that is possibily harmful. The difference is not brainwashing or mind control. Catholic Convents are intense too, but DLM ashrams were intense but in top of that unpredictable, for example they were closed without a good reason and explanation.
