I would say that "devotion to a master" is of very real consequence (to the devotee first and foremost because to the master there are many (devotees) but to the devotee there is only one Master.) Nietzsche was addressing this balance (or imbalance) in the relationship when he said : " The Master loves us differently than how we love him." If the mastery of Knowledge cannot be measured the cynic would say maybe there is nothing there to measure. Here we are talking in hushed and lofty tones about 'mastery of Knowledge' as if the field is somehow completely free of bullshit. On the contrary, some would say this is an area which is and has been the breeding ground of bullshit. What other area of human activity is so open to abuse? What other area of human activity is potentially so delusional and dangerous? No checks and balances, no critical thinking, unlimited amount of trust and all this resting atop the realm of feelings and emotions. Usually we have at least some reserve when it comes following the heart but in this arena we let go of all caution. In the West many people are open to challenges to the status quo. Many of us actually welcome it. But is that what Maharaji is doing? If the challenge is to become a devotee, to be 'transformed' into a devotee, many would pass on it. Why, because I don't think it is possible to convince people that in order to know yourself you have to become a devotee.
