Thoughtful post and completely relevant points. The concept of devotion between teacher and student is almost universally eschewed by ex-premies as a relic of misguided youth. In reality of course devotion is a very important and relevant topic to this forum; one that I am happy you raised. Throughout civilization, devotion to a teacher has been a recognized important ingredient to the transfer of certain bodies of knowledge and understanding. Certainly in all these special areas of learning a superficial understanding could be gained by peripheral and objective participation. But to infuse the understanding at the deepest level, devotion to a master is the key and necessary medium of transfer. This is because in these cases it is more than a mere body of knowledge that is being taught. Rather, it is a transformation that must take place within the student. With regards to the attainment of self-knowledge, by virtue of the plethora of examples rooted in both myth and historical evidence, it would be flawed to argue that devotion to a master is of no consequence. It is only debatable because there is no empirical metric to evaluate the mastery of Knowledge; unlike for other subjects like music, dance, or martial arts, for example. Hence, the cycle of ignorance and injustice brought on by the unbearably common whenever a Master has taken it upon himself to come out from the caves and challenge the status quo.
