The guy was mentally ill, and kind of sadistic, but he said he was just doing what Rawat told him to do.

I know you feel strongly about Smith. In fact, he was the guy who kicked me out of the ashram (thank you, David!). But, to be fair, who's to say he wasn't doing exactly what Rawat wanted in which case, he might have been neither mentally ill or sadistic, just a damn, good premie?
