You are right when you say that there has been a string of false gurus and false messiahs. They are sad stories of misguided devotion, surrender, idealism and sincerity and (self-)deception by the leader and his followers. The leaders never seem to give a detailed rebuttal to criticisms. Of course, there have been positive aspects too, like friendship, beautiful experiences, community that provides a safe environment for further growth.
SSB never left India for the West but he has shown stong interest in acquiring Western followers. Andries
