For what it's worth, I don't think the legal stuff 'broke' John MacGregor - he was broken years before by immersing himself in the debilitating cess pit that is the Rawat cult.
John's mistake was to believe (and to encourage others to believe) that he had the strength to take on Rawat's Queensland mafia, in doing so John was denying the extent to which Rawat had already drained from John the 'elan vital' that any human needs to get them through bad times.
I hope that John MacGregor does manage to regain some human dignity - though I'd say the prospects were slim - he seems to suffer too deeply the premie affliction of shadowy self absorbtion . At least in John's case it's more Snagel than Nazgull.
