The theological concensus is that when Christ said, "Don't judge" he did not mean in the sense of legal judgement or discernment or weighing of evidence. He meant your attitude should be "there but for the grace of God goes I". From this stance you can quite reasonably say that M is morally wrong or a criminal is guilty and merits gaol—these may be matters of simple, objective fact—but you would not assume you are intrinsically, morally better than M or the criminal. (Exes, of all people, should be aware that given the circumstances we'd probably all be herding Jews onto cattletrucks like any good party member.) It is all about attitude. I would say Christ's advice is pretty good, and entirely practicable. Crucial, in some contexts. I can bore you with the many Biblical references in support of this interpretation—I can see at least two central arguments—if you so desire. Criticising Christ for forbidding discernment and assessment is a very old error. I recall even Bertram Russell fell foul of it. Neville B |
