This idea that ashrams existed to help get premies off drugs was fabricated about 20 years after the ashrams closed as a consequence of public criticism of Rawat's actions. In all the literature of the period, in all the speeches by Rawat and his senior followers, in all the ashram meetings, and in the interviews I had with senior Divine Light Mission officials before moving into the ashrams, and the ashram secretaries of the two ashrams, this purpose of the ashrams was never mentioned. It is, as are so many other of Elan Vital's public statements, a lie. Whatever happened to the search for truth? John.
