This idea that ashrams existed to help get premies off drugs was fabricated about 20 years after the ashrams closed as a consequence of public criticism of Rawat's actions.
I realize that.
In all the literature of the period, in all the speeches by Rawat and his senior followers, in all the ashram meetings, and in the interviews I had with senior Divine Light Mission officials before moving into the ashrams, and the ashram secretaries of the two ashrams, this purpose of the ashrams was never mentioned.
I knew that too.
It is, as are so many other of Elan Vital's public statements, a lie. Whatever happened to the search for truth? Understood. Perhaps I did not make myself clear. I was giving them the theoretical 'benefit of the doubt' ONLY for the sake of juxtaposing it up against the fact that he closed the ashrams suddenly and without much warning and tossed all those people out into the streets, to illustrate the fact that if all those things they said after the fact about sheltering druggies etc were true (I know they are not), their own claims would make them look even worse, not better. i.e. their story would backfire on them. Get it? Their own shtick about the druggies being sheltered would make it look even more baffling and heartless when the ashrams were closed. San Modified by San at Tue, Jan 11, 2005, 06:37:09 |
