I'm amazed that you can say that you have great respect for John, especially professionally of all things.  John wrote an important expose of a dangerous cult and in so doing exemplified great personal and professional character.  However, he ultimately tried, however vainly, to undo that good work just to save himself from harrassment.  It's a sad, sad affair but it hardly leaves any room for respect, let alone of the professional kind. 

You know, I really liked John and I feel truly sorry for him.  But respect?  He hasn't left much room for that, I'm afraid.
