as being german myself i think i can take it up .......

The majority of the germans were completely indoctrinated by the nazi-propaganda. After the economic rise and the reinstallation of national power, many that have had doubt before, finally did give in. So even if they didn't love Hitler, very many people were fascinated by the success. My father was a teenager when he was drawn into the army, though he was sceptical, he was indoctrinated as well. How couldn't he?. Radio, The papers, any source of information was controlled. After the war when everything was over. When the cruelty of the regime and the gas-chambers came into the light of the public, they realized that the nazis could do this only because they were accepted as the rulers of Germany once. This is the guilt, the embarrassmnet. The germans couldn't find their way out of their illusion on their own. Only by loosing the war, from outside, could it be shown, that they were in fact entrapped inside the nazi-racism-cult.

What made me angry for years concerning my parents and elder people was their silence. Leaving a cult, not facing it, not really looking through the betrayal, makes it even more embarrasing and humbling, makes you leave it silently.
