I too have thought long and hard on the same subject.  I have come up with a possible cause for the lack of maternal protectiveness: god

If you have a sincere belief in god, the creature who gave you your babies in the first place, god is going to take a primary place in your sense of responsibility.  And god doesn't like angry women does he.
