When I was waiting to receive Knowledge, in a Knowledge selection someone asked the Mahatma why doesn't Maharaji say he is God. The Mahatma replied that he cannot, because as soon as he says the word 'I' he has created duality by separating himself from everything else. I recall I sort of accepted his explanation but filed it away believing I would understand when I received Knowledge. John.
