Hmmm, I find the Bible pretty repellent on its own without any school or church.  And like many people, I find Christians rather odd but then I'm rather odd myself...

Look we were around in the early seventies.  After a few months experimenting with acid I realised that was a dead end and so I thought I'd get God.  I tried the Jesus Freaks but even though two good friends of mine had joined them, I found their beliefs utterly unbelievable and so I tried the next avenue which was Divine Light Mission.

This is what I mean by a trap.  There's this young boy who says he has knowledge of God and anyone can receive it.  "Far out man" I thought, and there's even these cool dudes wearing robes and lots of hippies who have turned on to "The Knowledge" and so I thought "This is for me!"

But it was a cult and it gradually brainwashed out one's own set of beliefs and replaced them with a false belief system that was extremely damaging.  We never knew we were signing up for that.  I personally just thought I was getting knowledge of God.  I believed I was a devotee of God when I was a premie and it took a long time (without the internet) for me to realise that something was horribly wrong.

When you're in a cult, you don't know it and there's the rub.
