I was out in three years--moreover, I was only fifteen when I quit. If I could smell a rat at age fifteen then "older, wiser and better" people should have also.
I was helped by reading the New Testament, and seeing the vast disparity between what the NT really said and what M preached. But again, "older, wiser and better" people had also been raised in the Christian tradition and should have known better.
--All of which makes me think that the root problem lay partially with schools and the church. These institutions managed to make Christianity so repellant that people welcomed the various cults with open arms and willingly suspended their grasp of the New Testament.
