But couldn't it be true that many people who gave so much do not become disillusioned because that is just too painful? It is, I think, quite seductive to avoid the emotional suffering of disillusionment and shame of having to admit to yourself and others that you have been terribly wrong (which may be the reason for losing self-respect).Following an unconscious process that motivates an ardent follower to explain away the evidence that something is wrong is a very attractive alternative to disillusionment.
