....they were both in the Portsmouth Ashram (in the suburb of Farlington up on the hill ) when I was there ...circa 1974 . After Guru Puja (Copenhagen 1974 ) ,when Maharaji had just tied the knot with Marolyn, Graham , who was already losing his hair,..suddenly proposed marriage to me. It was all very Austenesque and, as I didn't fancy him I declined his somewhat incongruous offer as sensitively as I could. The next thing I knew he and Dorothy were announcing their impending marriage and plan to go and live on the Isle of Wight.
Almost thirty years later ( about three years ago ) I met them again at a local program ( on the mainland but I can see the Island from my hometown.)
Graham remembered me ( and I had recognised them ) and embarrassed me by recalling how I had taken all my clothes off on the beach at Southsea on an Ashram swimming spree ( I was later told off for this misdemeanour by Beth , the Ashram secretary ). So I suppose it was that moment of nudity that had inspired him to suggest a nuptial arrangement. ( Normally I was swathed in the Ashram quasi uniform of the time by " Mother Nature Fashions "which was a thick cotton most unsexy pinafore dress which almost touched the floor, so I suppose Graham felt that, on the beach, he had been able to peruse what was on offer. )
Anyhow , his marriage to Dorothy seems to have lasted longer than most premie ones and Graham told me that their two grown-up children went to University etc. I was too ladylike to remind him ( in front of his wife ) that he proposed to me first !
