There really is not a one-line piece of advice to give to a young person or their parents to educate them about cults. Here are statements from a few colleges and universities listed on the Cults on Campus website. It's about time that our institutions of higher learning started informing students about the danger signs of cults and other high-pressure groups that swarm campuses every day. I notice these places are still very hesitant about naming specific groups (that sticky freedom of religion issue blurs the subject in the U.S. all of the time). One thing to bear in mind when talking to kids about this subject is that not all cults are about religion. Some are political groups and others present themselves as cure-all therapy or mass-therapy panaceas to life. Then there are the New Age, pseudo-scientific types that offer their own self-styled solutions to life's problems. There are also other organizations, such as Narcanon, operated by the Scientologists, that claim to cure drug and alcohol addiction. International Church of Christ (ICOC) is one group that is a problem cult on campuses today. Cults on Campus has a lot of information about ICOC on its website. These are just a few of the colleges offering warnings: Stanford University - Office for Religious Life: http://religiouslife.stanford.edu/sar/warning.html University of Guelph - Ontario, Canada: http://www.uoguelph.ca/~lag/cult.shtml Responding to High Pressure Groups - California State University http://www.cultsoncampus.com/restohiggrou.html UCLA - University Religious Conference http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/URCfriend/pressure.html
