I guess "Catholic" doesn't really apply in this sense, because at least the Catholics do humanitarian work, have hospitals and send aid to feed people. 

Anyhow, I think Hartford had an ashram before the 1976 Renaissance and so did New Haven, I think.  But they closed down in 1976 and got restarted in 1977 as did a lot of others.

The Chicago ashram where I was at the time, never closed in the "humanitarian" period, and refugees from other ashrams that were closed got sent there.

The Boston ashram was another notorious one that never closed, that cool place they had in Brookline on Sewall Avenue.

Anyhow, if you want to read a great book by an ex-Nun and all the problems she had going back into the world, check out Karen Armstrong and her book "The Spiral Staircase."  I found it harrowing, but really interesting.  Below is the link.

Also, I read her book a few years ago called "The History of God," which I thought was great too.
