The latest " apology", as you ( I think) pointed out is reminiscent of a hostage condemning America, as Islamofascits lurk around off camera brandishing the sword that could be used to chop off his/her head.
That's what I felt too. I thought "Stockholm Syndrome" when I read it. It wasn't really an apology, it was really a plea for mercy, reminicient of how people taken hostage and abused begin to identify with their captors -- it comes from a deeper level in someone who sees no way out, deeper than like or dislike or even fear. It comes from the instinct for self-preservation. You can't get any deeper than that.
When you are in a situation like John, when you are relentlessly pursued by organizations with big bucks and nasty lawyers, and basically no human constraints whatsoever because they think God is on their side, appeasement and pleas for self-preservation may be all you have left. I can't blame John for doing what he did because I don't know what I would do in the same situation.
Having said that, John still has the integrity not to disavow anything he wrote or said. Which means, I hope that there is hope.
