Hi Cynthia, Always great to hear you speaking out against prejudiced thinking towards mental illness. Totally concur with what you are saying except for one big thing, I feel that Livia feels the same way you ( we ) do.

Maybe there is a Br. English/ Am. English difference in the meaning of the expression " but others sink into a depression they just can't get out of...". In Br. Eng. the " just can't get out of .." means unable to get out of no matter how hard they try " and is a more-or-less sympathetic comment.

Anyway here are the words to John Lennon's jolly ( despite the subject ) song :-

Whatever Gets You Through The Night
John Lennon

Whatever gets you through the night 'salright, 'salright
It's your money or life 'salright, 'salright
Don't need a sword to cut through flowers oh no, oh no

Whatever gets you through your life 'salright, 'salright
Do it wrong or do it right 'salright, 'salright
Don't need a watch to waste your time oh no, oh no

Hold me darlin' come on listen to me
I won't do you no harm
Trust me darlin' come on listen to me, come on listen to me
Come on listen, listen

Whatever gets you to the light 'salright, 'salright
Out the blue or out of sight 'salright, 'salright
Don't need a gun to blow your mind oh no, oh no

Hold me darlin' come on listen to me
I won't do you no harm
Trust me darlin' come on listen to me, come on listen to me
Come on listen, listen

Why not put on ( play loud ) and listen.?like  I just did.( Wish I could do those music links)
