now that the sun is out I am using a third of the electricity generated by the solar panels and storing two thirds in the battery - I am off grid!

note of caution about where you install it - it has a fan to keep it cool which is a bit noisy I reckon.

Cool!

I saw a Tesla installation truck at a house nearby installing batteries for someone.

Keep us posted as to how it goes.

Heh. How many solar panels do you have? How much power?

20 panels, I think they deliver 3kw and the battery stores 5.  It filled up during the day and then I was exporting to grid and when the sun went down  to now which is 11pm I have used about a quarter of the stored power.  so it's not oodles of power but I am in effect powering two households with the downstairs flat.  From here til the morning it's really just keeping two fridges powered.  It will be interesting to see how much is still in the battery.  what surprised me was that early morning it was dense cloud not much sun at all and yet the panels were still delivering .4kw.

Good setup. Twice as good, supplying two households. I guess in a way you're seeking your own electricity to your tenants

A bit of cloud didn't matter to much but shadows do. I was totally dependent on solar on the boat for the laptop ( navigation), warning systems, lights, self steering gear, so I paid a lot of attention to the system. I found the shadow of a thin rigging wire across a panel on a sunny day would reduce the output by half. So watch out for branches casting shadows, and dirt building up. That counts for more than you'd expect.

thanks, yes the sun is behind light cloud at the moment and I am getting enough that it is starting to recharge the battery, which went down to 30% overnight.

No trees overhanging the roof but I was wondering about salt build-up but I guess the rain keeps them clean enough.  When I first came here there were solar panels and when the inverter failed they told me it was cheaper to take them down and replace with the set up I have now than to add to them but I asked what condition they were in and he said they were good.

My tenant, an American woman was only going to be here for a few months over Summer so I just added a small amount to the rent and provided the services but then the virus struck and she has been here ever since, fortunately she is not a big power user, and has been a very pleasant tenant, looking to find a spot in the bush now - she doesn't want to go back to America!
