Hi Pat, thanks we are doing fine. And I hope you as well. I have been extra busy doing the home office thing. But we are going to half open the agency this week, because some of the staff are going crazy at home and the government has eased restrictions a bit starting today. I think we can do a good job of protecting people and still have a semblance of going back to work, because we have a lot of space.

About the China thing, I just meant that I don't think it is a good strategy to get into a coronavirus blame game right now. At the very worst, there was an accident at a Chinese lab and they covered it up. I don't believe they did this on purpose. That is just going way too far down the conspiracy hole for me. China still has a lot to offer the world community in overcoming this, beyond basic supplies they are a major producer of pharmaceuticals.

Germany is doing well so far. Hopefully that will continue. I am certainly grateful to be here right now. I think it comes down to three things:

1. Germany already had a more robust health infrastructure than many countries with respect to hospital and ICU beds.

2. They started testing and preparing earlier than most other countries. The testing has been widely reported. But there are other things. A friend of mine is a male nurse at Charite ICU, which is the world renowned university hospital in Berlin. He told me that they had already set up a special Covid-19 many weeks before they had their first patient. And they have a special system for dealing with the containment there which saves on exposure and efficiently uses supplies.

In addition Berlin constructed an additional emergency hospital with 1000 beds in the now closed trade show centre here. I think they haven't even had to use it yet.

So the reason for a low fatality rate in Germany is because of high testing (which statistically lowers the fatality rate) but also because the health care system is not overwhelmed.

3. Merkel has shown great leadership in unifying both the government and the population. This is reflected in her sky high approval rating right now at 80%. This means that the politicians are all working together and people are mostly cooperating with the restrictions. By the way, the restrictions are not as severe as other places. Much is voluntary, but people mostly stick to it. So when you go to a park you see people in groups of 2s. This is allowed. You see some larger groups of idiots and teenagers, but they are really the exception and everyone bad vibes them.

I don't really know what is going on in the UK but I do worry about you folks there.
