August 1973 for me, too (roadtrip to Kansas City, KS). I was living just up the road in East Lansing. We went to see Guru Maharaji at Cobo Hall in Detroit a few weeks later, but he never showed-up... just a bunch of safron robed mahatmas. We had to cross a line of riled-up Christians to get in. Apparently, they couldn't deal with the Lord returning and they wanted to save us. The Hare Krishna's weren't too happy about it either, but at least they beat their drums and sang loudly at us from off to the side. A magical summer evening for sure.
