What happened for me was that, encapsulated as I was in the hermetic cult scenario, I met a good woman who drank, smoked and did many uncult-like things, yet who was a totally splendid person, greatly human, and who really raised people around her. She just encapsulated all those qualities which make for a fine person. Maybe she was a good natural Christian, which she would have denied. She was just a fine and good human - which IMO is better at the day's end than any other considerations, and which I believe to be the end product of any spiritual path anyway. I guess it was through her that I began to see that many teachers exist who can offer some uplifting experience, but who can be quite flawed too. Maharaji obviously continues to offer a touching experience too. This is what continues to keep his followers, but with flawed consequences, as he doesn't offer any humane ethical considerations. It seems to me that to approach your husband with the notion that, while one wishes to pursue some type of liberation, this is deeply connected with the everyday realities of connection with others and traditional responsibilities (endorsed by former ‘Masters’) may be useful. Basically – to try to ground him through a notion of good sense endorsed by former teachers. Good luck, anyway, Tempora |
