One of the problems with being in a 'cult' or any other group that is delineated by a particular paradigm is that the individual rapidly and imperceptibly adopts a world view that excludes that which doesn't fit the paradigm. This especially affects how we 'see' other people - those who don't support the paradigm become invisible to us - we don't 'meet' them because they are 'not there'.
