I share your interest in autism. After reading Animals in Translation, I discovered that Temple Grandin wrote an earlier (1986) autobiographical work call Emergence. I'm reading it now and have to force myself to slow down and actually set the book aside so I can think about things. She is our contemporary so her descriptions of growing up are very familiar. Her parents were upper middle class professionals and her mother was especially inciteful and understanding. She wrote some marvelous letters (included in the book) to the various professionals working with Temple as a little girl and you can't help but applaud this wonderful woman.
