I also have my own theory about this (don't we all). I think that part of the cult phenomena is just an anomalie of a wider basic human trait. I think that we humans in our make-up have a kind of instinct to follow a charismatic leader. Like wild horses follow a sexy stallion."Sexy stallion?" Well sir, most stallions on breeding farms around here (and in the wilds) are pretty skinny and beat up ole boys from fightin' and fuckin' and just generally being way more full of piss and vinegar than their cut cousins.
Besides, in the herd, nobody follows the stud stallion. They follow the dominant and smartest mare. They give the sexy stallion a wide berth mostly. It's the same in cow society. One giant bull may be dominant and get the best food, drink and the sexiest ladies, but the herd looks to a a wise old cow for leadership.
