To me a pastoral bedroom community was a town 20 miles north of the big city. We had a population of about 15,000, a little downtown area with a mini-mall thing with a couple grocery stores, drugstores, a quaint train station, and nice schools, quiet tree lined streets, and churches and no crime.
There probably was a Divine Light Mission in Portland, but I think you might be remembering a Hari Krishna ashram. They often had free food. Did you have to sing Hari Krishna to get food? I know that I had stopped in and dined with the Krishnas in a number of communities in my hippie daze.
