It has some interesting reader reviews.
I loved the way Holy Smoke started out, but the way it finished was over the top and silly. I was hoping that it would deal with real cult issues instead of veering off to work on feminism.
I thought the Keitel character was completely over the top and as such made all the feminist issues presented too much of a blatant slam-dunk and being hit on the head with a hammer. Where's the subtly? Beautiful and intelligent, strong willed, spiritual woman - good. Macho chauvinist pig sex-driven man - bad. Hmmmmm, fire - bad.
In many ways Holy Smoke reminded me of the awful and way over the top Arthur Penn movie 'Missouri Breaks' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074906/) with Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson and others. And in Missouri Breaks we get to see Brando acting strangely and wearing dresses, too.
At the time of Missouri Breaks Brando was at one of his career zeniths. And I think the same can be said for Keitel. It's funny how actors somehow get roped into one of these over the top roles. Well, I guess when you're feeling on top of the world and invincible you'll embark on a trip to anywhere.
