"... always as an exclamation of surprise. Is that true?"

Yes, yes , that is what I meant by my reference to Columbo :>

'Do people in the UK still say "Cheese and Rice" as an alternative to "Jesus Christ?" '
Never ever heard that particular one, however I have heard people from the Emerald Isle use the word "BeJayus" when stressing a point.

'As an American I used to laugh that people thought "bloody" was a dirty word.'
Our very own Prince Charlie and his dad have been known to use 'bloody' on numerous occassions so that makes it ok :>)

'Being a good Methodist, my mother always used to say "Judas, Priest" instead of "Jesus Christ'.
How strange if I remember the Greek Testament correctly or was she refering to a Gothic pop star?

The use of 'shoot' is all over American soaps and films. The Australians are also trying to use it in a faked attempt not to appear crude.

Thanks for the Elgar. Very pleasant for this time of the morning (6:50am).

Being in the cult until 1997 I didn't listen to much music except for devotional music ( and Frakie Valli of course!). My musical appreciation and development has been stunted, however I am catching up, although not yet in the classical scene.

All the best

Jethro
