I have to admit that "deviancy amplication spiral" model cannot be applied for Jonestown. But the model itself sounds plausible, that is how conflicts often escalate.

I think that it is important to make a distinction between the wisest solution of society and blaming society. I dunno much about Waco/Branch Davidians/David Koresh but I have the impression that they did not take the wisest decisions but the blame can be put, I think, on the cult. You cannot blame society when a cult overreacts because it is paranoid and apocalyptic.

I have to admit that I am angry about two things that Barker wrote in her book "Introduction by NRMs".
1. She wrote that a descrition of a NRM by critical former members is like a descricption of marriage by people who are divorced

ad. 1 I think this an unfair comparison. A marriage is a one to one relationship unlike a cult. A better comparison would be between those of critical former owners of a certain type of car.

2. She uses the word "disillusionment" only in her chapter about "deprogramming"

ad. 2 Many former are very disillusioned, not confined to those who were deprogrammed.

By the way, efforts at Wikipedia to portray oppponents of NRMs and cults as unreliable, biased, bigotted etc. continue unabated. I feel very upset about this because I feel seriously harmed and I make justified complaints about a certain cult.
