Hi Chris I remember in the early days of exiting making a few passionate speeches about how it wasn't so surprising we fell for it, after all we were expecting a second coming weren't we? At eighteen I was not old and experienced enough to realise that people would lie about such things. Or that people could sincerely believe something so fundamental and yet it be untrue. If your mum tells you god exists, well you believe her don't you? She was right about all sorts of things like if you get stung by stinging nettles, look around and you will also find dock leaves growing nearby to soothe the sting. And she certainly had my best interests at heart, she loved me so. So when she tells me about god, when she tells me Jesus is a special person who is looking after me, you might wonder, and I do remember my uncertainty on this, how come it is not self evident like the dock leaves, how come you don't see god or jesus yourself, but you don't doubt your mum. I sometimes think quite seriously that the reason these messiah myths get established even why religious wars are so intemperate is because people are defending their mums' virtue!!! |
