It is the belief that the experience has greater significance than the postive effects you mention that requires verification...

I agree 100%.

However wonderful an experience I might have, or another person might report themselves to have had, that is private.

For myself, the only 'verification', and the only meaningful 'significance', is how a private experience like that plays out in the public arena of my behavior and actions with other people and the world in general.

Unfortunately, many examples play out negatively, as we on this Forum are all too aware of. But I don't believe they all do.
