It's expensive, but not as expensive as not having the health care infrastructure. We're up to nearly 20,000 deaths, and the daily numbers are still almost as high as they've been and if we're at some flattened peak, it's taking a good while to find the downslope.
Turns out a govt report on the possibility of a pandemic at the end of last year was super timely and pretty spot on with its recommendations of gathering PPE and organising how contact tracing would be implemented. But it wasn't acted on.
Although a pandemic was inevitable, it was always very low risk that it would kick off on any particular day, so I guess it was easy to kick the expense and effort into the long grass.
