Local community premies paid for Knowledge Sessions. In our case, we had a leased hall that was certified for Knowledge Sessions. The lease payments and community expenses were coverd by (generous) monthly pledges from about fifteen premies. We even had automatic monthly checking account debits that deposited the funds in the community account.
Knowledge Sessions were covered by a separate pledge system. Local premies - often the same as those making regular monthly pledges - pledged to donate a certain amount if an when it was necessary for a Knowledge Session. The $150 donation for a KS in your post was typical. Since the hall, equipment and everything necessary for a KS was already available and paid for, the biggest expense was travel and hotel for the instructor (known as an "operator" when it switched to Mahatma Macs.)
All aspirants had to do was get there and many flew in from all over the U.S.
