I read a lot of books by Alan Watts, like The Taboo (Against Knowing Who You Are) which now seems to be called The Book on the Taboo (AKWYA) and The Way of Zen etc. When I first moved to Australia I brought his books with me, and the customs people took them away to check that they weren't somehow forbidden. This introduced me to Australian censorship - and I was very surprised. They did return the books eventually.

And I really liked Lobsang Rampa, who was an English guy who decided to change his name and become a guru (at least in books). I wrote to him once and asked if he could be my guru, and he actually wrote back and told me to find one near me. That sort of made me more open to MJ when I stumbled across him.

I was an avid reader of all that stuff. And yes, of course I had a copy of Be Here Now and Stranger in a Strange Land. I "grokked" it all. LOL
