Although all the etymologies I can find for guru say it's from the Sanskrit meaning grave, heavy, as well as a spiritual teacher; the words gu and ru also exist in Sanskrit, and have several meanings (not including darkness and light). The meanings that seem appropriate to Rawat are gu = to void by stool; and ru = to cry aloud. So clearly a guru is one who takes you from being in the shit, to crying aloud. Sounds about right. John.
