As Lexy and Jim remarked one cannot choose to believe and have faith. This is generally accepted among philosophers. Once I believed that SSB was my God, I felt I had no choice than to follow him. One cannot choose to believe but one can choose to investigate. Belief formation is something very mysterious and complex. I think that brainwashing as used by the psychiatrist Robert J. Lifton and Schein is not the right term to explain the process of belief formation in the DLM and the Sathya Sai organisation. But in informal use the term brainwashing is appropriate: some people are brainwashed by SSB and his organisation: that is they are strongly convinced of implausible ideas and unopen for evidence of being wrong.
