I never realised those were the words of an old English Mystic poet called Treherne till recently.Yeah, well, too bad.
Actually, Traherne & the other so called metaphysical poets were expressing themselves in an age when the old certainties of the medieval world were going down after the Reformation. That time was also when scientific enquiry was beginning to be accepted as a means to reveal the workings of God to Man, & to make possible an improvement in the human condition.
Traherne might be called a Protestant optimist, depending on the way you like to look at these things, or maybe an early nature poet. What he certainly couldn't have been is a watered down Hindu with a screechy violin. I heard a while back that the I.S. band were into Scientology........don't know if that's true or not, & I couldn't give a damn anyway.
I always preferred the Rolling Stones.
Anyway, there's no reason to suppose that Traherne wouldn't've been up for gunning down Papists, burning witches, & all the rest of it.
Enlightenment comes from the mind. There is no other route.
