Many were college students, some were older, most came from upper-middle-class families, almost entirely white with high proportions from Jewish and Catholic backgrounds (way higher than the percentages in the general population). For a while, in the Harrisburg, PA ashram, I was the only white bread in the crowd! Of course there were only four of us altogether, and I didn't realize Colonel Clink Alice was African-American, as she affected an Indian accent and I thought she was Pakistani or some other exotic enlightened species.
