John, they had to provide some "bait" in order to suck John into the trap. No doubt "they" thought "they" could weather whatever minor storm such a revelation might cost. They weighed the costs versus the effect and found it favorable, I guess. Also they have been successful in bullshitting people and spinning and revisionism in the past so their very arrogance and confidence in these areas could lead them to take this risk.
It would be interesting to see if the expose' had any effect on lenders' status. Did anyone withdraw pledges or make demands for immediate reimbursement? I don't know how we could find out this information though, but it would be quite telling.
